Finding Freedom and Joy in Being Yourself
There’s pressure to conform, fit in, and meet societal expectations all around us. Family, friends, classmates, coworkers, social media - you name it. What we wear, buy, look like, listen to, type of place we call home, how we travel, if we have kids, get married, your hairstyle, your body shape! EVERYTHING!!
I went to a predominantly white elementary school and being a pudgy darker skin kid that didn’t have a lot money so my clothes were Walmart and shoes Payless. That was a blessing in disguise as this is where I accepted and settled into being different from others and was ok. I focused on what I could control and the material things wasn’t one of them. My mother also telling me "everyone is not going to like you," instilled in me that seeking acceptance from others should not dictate my self-worth.
I truly feel this early acceptance & self-awareness allowed me to develop a strong sense of self and paved the way for my authentic journey.
Understanding what it is YOU desire, YOUR interests, YOUR values builds the foundation for authenticity. Authenticity is not just about being true to yourself, but finding the courage to express our true selves in all aspects of life. Authenticity grants us a sense of freedom that is often overlooked.
In a society that often values external appearances and material possessions, it is crucial to recognize the worth of authenticity. The struggle with authenticity arises when we prioritize external validation over embracing our true selves and desires. Fear of not being accepted is another struggle. While being authentic may not always lead to universal acceptance, it allows YOU to live life on YOUR own terms. The freedom to be yourself, without the fear of judgment, is a powerful catalyst for personal growth and fulfillment.
Embracing your authenticity is not only liberating but also essential for your overall well-being and happiness.
So I challenge you. I challenge you to reflect on what it is YOU want, what YOU enjoy, what brings YOU peace, what's YOUR values as that will set you up to live YOUR life on YOUR own terms, free from the pressures of conformity and external validation.
